The Job Was Not the Dream

The job you are waiting for is not the only way to build a life.

I think about people waiting on the sidelines for a job they believe will finally make their life begin.

I understand that feeling because I spent most of my life believing the same thing.

The right company. The stable paycheck. The title that would prove I had made it.

I was 22 when I entered a Fortune 100 technology organization and 26 when I left.

Four years taught me three things.

Companies are not meritocracies.

Titles are not identity.

Access changes opportunity.

The corporate world can provide stability, learning, and a good living. Some people genuinely enjoy it, and there is nothing wrong with that.

But a job asks you to fit. Whatever does not fit, you leave at the door.

I spent years believing the paycheck would make that trade worth it.

When the choice came, I chose myself.

Ten out of ten times.

I am not romanticizing uncertainty. People need jobs to live.

You imagine the title, the office, the salary, and the belonging. You do not imagine the slow cost of becoming legible to a system: asking permission, fitting the role, protecting the hierarchy.

But you do not have to let one company become your entire identity.

That is one reason AI matters to me. It lowers the cost of learning, prototyping, and proving what you can do.

It cannot guarantee success. But it can help you build evidence, test ideas, and create more than one option.

Choose a real problem. Build something small. Document what you learn.

You do not have to abandon yourself to prove you are employable.
